Student Ambassador Study

TMI Student Ambassadors deliver sustainability case studies for TMI members

We're delighted to be able to share the second from our series of sustainable case studies developed by our TMI Student Ambassadors, who have volunteered their time to interview destination managers from across the UK, and composed the resources for your consumption.

The second case study is from Marzieh Ghafouri Varzaneh, a graduate MSc student in International Hospitality and Tourism Management
at Sheffield Hallam University. Marzieh interviewed, Marketing Manchester’s Tourism Sustainability Manager, Richard Walker to find out how he has been developing, implementing, and promoting initiatives to position Manchester as a top sustainable destination.

During the interview, Marzieh draws out the issues faced by the destination and explored the initiatives and actions that Marketing Manchester implemented to overcome the challenges to drive sustainability across the city's tourism sector. Marzieh concludes by sharing important insights and knowledge that fellow members can gain from Marketing Manchester's project. The strategy of Marketing Manchester in sustainability provides many important takeaways for other destination management organizations (DMOs) starting down the same path.

This idea for this initiative came from university lecturers Natalie Semley (Falmouth University) and Nick Davies (Glasgow Caledonian University) who are active members of our TMI Sustainability Working Group. Responding to the need for more sustainability case study material for TMI members they developed and delivered dedicated interview training for our Ambassadors and identified relevant destination partners for them to interview, supporting the students throughout the process. The project is a great example of how valuable our Student Ambassadors are, and how they can act as researchers to help promote sustainable practice in our industry.

TMI are hugely grateful to Natalie and Nick for giving their time and expertise to deliver this important project to train and empower our Student Ambassadors to gain first-hand insight from destinations that are implementing sustainability into their organisations.

With the academic term in full flow, we would like to encourage newly appointed Ambassadors to engage with this project. If you have a case study you would like to share, but no time to write it up, please get in touch and we will see what they can do!

The full case studies are available to view in the sustainable resources section of the members area of the website
