Rachel McCaffery, Sustainability Lead – VisitEngland
TMI are delighted that Rachel McCaffery will speak about Visit England’s framework, approach to sustainable tourism and provide an overview of some of the tools and initiatives underway.
Sustainability Lead at VisitEngland, Rachel McCaffery, has 20 years experience working with tourism businesses, governments and international organisations on sustainable and regenerative tourism development and practical implementation.
After completing a Masters in Sustainable Tourism Policy, Rachel moved into commercial roles for Airtours/Thomas Cook and then Virgin Holidays. She developed Virgin’s sustainability strategy and spent 10 years heading up Virgin Holidays’ Sustainability team, before leaving to establish her own consultancy in 2011. Over the past decade she has worked on sustainable tourism initiatives from Malta to Micronesia for organisations including STA Travel, G Adventures, The Emirates Group, Virgin Atlantic, World Animal Protection, WWF, Travel Without Plastic, The European Commission, United Nations and Inter American Development Bank.
An international expert on sustainable tourism, Rachel has played a key role in the creation of a number of industry tools in use worldwide, including the European Travel Commission’s Handbook on Sustainable Tourism Implementation for NTOs, the Travelife Certification for Accommodations and ABTA’s Global Guidance on Animal Welfare.
The key themes of sustainability and accessibility will be the focus of this year's online TMI Hot Topic event.
