This year's event is being supported by the West Midlands Growth Company.
The West Midlands Growth Company (WMGC) is the West Midlands region's investment promotion and destination management organisation.
Backed by the West Midlands Combined Authority, it consists of seven constituent metropolitan authorities, and five of the region’s universities and brings together the strengths of the public, private and academic sectors to deliver sustainable, inclusive growth for the West Midlands.
WMGC's mission is to attract investment, businesses and visitors to the West Midlands to grow the economy, create jobs and deliver a better quality of life for those who live and work here.
Sustainable West Midlands
As part of the recovery strategy from the pandemic, the West Midlands, seized the opportunity to fast-track its recovery and promote environmental sustainability, equality, diversity, and inclusion values through significant milestones and capital developments.
The West Midlands Sustainability Roadmap to 2030 is dedicated to enhancing social, economic, and environmental indicators in the region for a more sustainable, fairer, and greener community. WMGC's Business and Tourism programme (BATP) has been a strong advocate for sustainability and social value, especially during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which aimed to be the first carbon-neutral Games. The West Midlands is at the forefront of efforts to achieve the national target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, while also addressing health disparities and promoting inclusive growth. In line with the national sustainability agenda, WMGC is prioritizing sustainability in West Midlands destinations to meet the criteria of the Global Destination Sustainability Movement index.
Earlier this year, the West Midlands Growth Company commissioned the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index to assess its Environmental, Social, Supplier and Destination Management performance for the first time.
The GDS Index is used to benchmark cities and supply chains, and takes into consideration a range of factors from energy emissions and air quality, to diversity, inclusion, and equality.
Birmingham scored 44.46 in the report, with the city ranked 75th out of 100 destinations and leading the West Midlands scoring (top destinations received a score between 70 and 90). This was in line with expectations for a first-time score and provides tailored recommendations regarding sustainability policy and practice and incentivises the region to continue to improve sustainability performance.
